Everything you need to know before you ride with us
RideCarpathia is a hard enduro, ATV and UTV rental and guided tour company based at Pasul Vâlcan, above Bumbești-Jiu in Gorj County, in Romania's Southern Carpathians. We ride the Vâlcan and Parâng mountains, the Jiu Gorge and the trails around Transalpina from April to November.
Our base is at Pasul Vâlcan (Vâlcan Pass, 1,621 m) above Bumbești-Jiu, in Gorj County, southwestern Romania. The pass sits in the Vâlcan Mountains, right above the Jiu Gorge and facing the Parâng Mountains, about 25 km north of Târgu Jiu. The nearest airport is Craiova (about 1.5 hours by car); Sibiu is about 3 hours and Bucharest about 4 hours away. Airport transfer is included in the 5-day Carpathian Expedition and can be arranged for any other booking.
A KTM 250 EXC TPI rents for €150 per day and a KTM 300 EXC TPI for €170 per day. ATVs are €120 per day and UTVs €200 per day. Every rental includes full protective gear, a basic tool kit, a trail map and roadside assistance.
The 1-day Day Explorer tour costs €250 per person, the 2-day Weekend Warrior €550 per person and the 5-day Carpathian Expedition €1,800 per person. All tours include bike, gear, a local guide, meals and photos. Multi-day tours also include accommodation. Groups of 4 or more riders get a 10% discount.
The Day Explorer suits intermediate riders comfortable on forest trails and river crossings. The Weekend Warrior is intermediate to advanced, and the 5-day Carpathian Expedition is for advanced hard enduro riders. Custom tours can be adapted to any level, including beginners on ATV or UTV.
We ride new KTM 250 EXC TPI and KTM 300 EXC TPI two-stroke hard enduro bikes fitted with mousse tires, so there are no flat tires on the trail. For non-motorcyclists we offer sport ATVs (570cc) and side-by-side UTVs (1000cc).
Our season runs from April to November. Spring brings water crossings and soft ground, summer offers long days and alpine meadows above 2,000 m, and autumn has dry, grippy trails with the best views.
You need a valid driving licence and must be at least 18 years old. Trails are mostly off-road on forest and mountain tracks; short connections on public roads may require a motorcycle licence for enduro bikes. Basic protective gear and roadside assistance are included. We recommend personal travel insurance that covers motorsport.
Groups are limited to 8 riders so pacing stays flexible and everyone gets attention. Our guides are local riders who know every trail and speak English and Romanian, with German and French support on request.
